What Are Directly Compressible (DC) Granules? A Complete Guide

Directly Compressible (DC) Granules are one of the most important enablers of modern, efficient tablet manufacturing — yet many formulators still rely on older, multi-step processes. This guide explains what DC Granules are, how they work, and why they're changing the way solid dosage forms are made.
What Are DC Granules?
Directly Compressible Granules are semi-formulated active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) engineered so they can be compressed directly into tablets in a single step — without the need for separate granulation and drying. In other words, the granules arrive "ready to compress." A formulator simply blends, lubricates if needed, and compresses.
This is fundamentally different from conventional manufacturing, where the API must first be granulated (often using wet granulation), dried, milled, and only then compressed.
How Direct Compression Works
In a direct compression workflow, the DC Granules already have the flow, uniformity, and compressibility characteristics required for tableting built in. The manufacturer:
Blends the DC Granules (with any additional excipients)
Compresses directly on a tablet press
That's it — no wet massing, no drying ovens, no intermediate milling. Fewer steps means less equipment, less energy, less processing time, and fewer points where variability or contamination can be introduced.
DC Granules vs Wet Granulation
Wet granulation has been the industry default for decades, but it carries real costs: multiple pieces of equipment, long processing times, solvent or water use, drying energy, and greater batch-to-batch variability. DC Granules remove most of that. For heat- or moisture-sensitive APIs especially, avoiding the wet-and-dry cycle can also protect stability.
Key Benefits of DC Granules
Simplified manufacturing — a single compression step replaces granulation and drying
Cost efficiency — fewer machines, less energy, lower labor
Faster time-to-market — streamlined development and production
Consistent quality — reliable content uniformity and dosing
Better patient experience — higher active content and lower excipient load enable smaller, easier-to-swallow tablets
Sustainability — solvent-free processes reduce environmental impact
Applications
DC Granules are suited to a wide range of therapeutic categories — anti-diabetic, cardiovascular, antibiotic, respiratory, and more — and to Immediate Release (IR), Sustained Release (SR), and Extended Release (XR) profiles.
Working With a DC Granules Manufacturer
The quality of your finished tablet depends heavily on the quality of the granule. A capable DC Granules manufacturer combines proprietary technology with strong R&D to deliver granules with excellent flow, compressibility, and uniformity — and can develop custom granules for challenging molecules.
At YSK Laboratories, our proprietary, solvent-free direct-compression technology produces DC Granules across major therapy areas, in IR and SR/XR profiles, at a WHO GMP and ISO 9001:2015 certified facility.
